Mixed XI win the Bowdon Summer League

Macclesfield Hockey Club’s mixed side became only the 2nd non-Bowdon team in seven years to win Bowdon Hockey Club’s Mixed Summer League. The team won 6 of its nine games drawing with Boyice’s Allstars (a mixed side from Bowdon) but losing to Brooklands MU and Lymm HC.

Going into the last game the team knew they stood a chance of finishing 1st but more realistically were looking at a top 5 finish, especially as they were playing the league leaders The HB’s (another Bowdon mixed side).

The game itself was a tough encounter with The HB’s able to field several National League ladies players and some highly skilled Men’s Vets, but thanks to some outstanding team play Macclesfield ran out 3-0 winners with goals from Mark Portnell (2) and Matthew Johnson. Although the win lifted Macclesfield into top spot they were still not guaranteed of finishing 1st as Brooklands MU just had to beat Bowdon R&B (a team Macclesfield had already beaten 2-1) but the hockey gods smiled good fortune on Macclesfield as Bowdon ran out 3-2 winners against Brooklands.

In response to winning, mixed captain Aaron Gaskell said “I’d like to congratulate all the players & thanks everyone who chipped in”
