Macclesfield Ladies 2-1 win at Chester
Macclesfield ladies hockey team made hard work out of the game played away at Chester on Saturday. They started very strongly with some flowing hockey outpacing their opponents. Three short corners had been won within the first ten minutes. Chester rallied and it was down to some great goalkeeping by Sutton to ensure the score remained at 0 – 0.
Suddenly, Macclesfield found an opening after some great moves in the midfield by Heylings and Ward. Heylings passed to Barlow in the D who neatly placed the ball through the keeper’s legs with a reverse stick strike. Only two minutes later and Macclesfield were on the attack again. The Heylings-Barlow combination was on form as an almost identical move gained a comfortable lead of 2 – 0.
Play continued to be built up from around the back with man of the match Perry feeding the ball out to the wings. There were some great runs by Collins and tenacious play by Hayward, the player’s player.
At half-time the mood was buoyant with general agreement that the score could be higher.
Macclesfield continued the pressure with lots of short corners. However, Chester took their opportunity on the break to make it 2 – 1. At the final whistle, there was relief that the victory had been won. A lot of effort had been expended when perhaps it could have been easier. We saw some great team work, some superb individual efforts and when these two collide we can watch some fantastic hockey.
